At Shed studios in East London we are currently loving the work of Japanese born photographer Fumi Nagasaka. In 2001 she moved across the pond to New York to study English, and soon after found herself travelling across Europe documenting her travels with her camera. She initially started shooting for cult Japanese magazine ‘Street,’ following on to shoot her own fashion stories for a variety of renowned publications. Her photography is both classic and contemporary, she often shoots her fashion subjects in fairly traditional way, but the look and aesthetic of her images has a more modern edge. Nagasaka simultaneously manages to capture her sitters’ beauty with very unique technique and it seems that this overall feel of her images it what makes her such a sort after photographer. One of our favourite editorials shot by Nagasaka is one for Dazed, and is pictured on her website. It consists of a variety of faces all captured in Nagasaka’s signature style and with the same quality running throughout, whether she is picturing a small ginger girl with freckles or a rocker boy sporting an afro. We would love to have her at SHED studios if she ever finds herself travelling to London! Be sure to keep an eye out for Nagasaka’s up and coming shoots.
