Last year we at SHED studios had the pleasure of welcoming photographer duo Luke and Nik to East London. Looking back over some of their archival work we were especially drawn to their documentary images, specifically the pictures they captured during a month long residency in Ahmedabad, a relatively small west Indian city. They discovered Ahmedabad lacked the typical qualities that would attract and entertain tourists, resulting in the area representing a closer idea of local Indian life, a breadth away from the usual touristic snaps you see of the Indian market place or crowded streets. The duo began documenting the surrounding landscape, with a beautiful mix of colour and black and white imagery. They went onto create a series full of the peculiar intricacies of everyday Ahmadabad life. There are a mixture of portraits landscapes and chance happenings, all beautifully captured and framed and the viewer is allowed a comprehensive and rare insight into the workings of the local community. Luke and Nik have gone onto focus on fashion photography and film, their most current work consists mostly of this genre and they carry across the same thoughtful style, producing images that are still a pleasure to behold. They continue to work together and have also set up an online platform for emerging artists entitle ‘Wandering Bears’ which boasts a beautiful instagram page full of new photographers’ travels. Have a look at more of what Luke and Nik do here.
